About Me

I was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1991 and served as an Associate Rector in suburban Chicago until I was called as a Rector in Sterling Illinois. After serving there, I accepted a call to Saint Margaret’s in Lawrence Kansas where I served until 2007. From there, I moved to the Diocese of Texas where I served for ten years at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Katy. In 2018, I left full-time parish ministry to focus on my grief, following the untimely and unexpected death of my son. After three years, I reentered ministry and served as an Interim Rector in Texas and now serve at All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Omaha Nebraska.  While this makes demands on my time,  I find time to continue writing a book and am available for non-profit, church and personal consulting.  If you are interested in learning more please contact me.

Background

After completing my first degree at the University of Kansas, I began a successful career as a public school educator.  As the chair of the Social Science Department at a high school in Topeka, Kansas, I received recognition from the Honors Program at the University of Kansas as an outstanding teacher and mentor of high school students.

Following my nine-year career as a public school educator, I was accepted into the graduate program at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.  During my three year studies, I focused on systematic theology.  Following my graduation in 1991, I began my twenty-seven-year career as an Episcopal priest in the Dioceses of Chicago, Kansas, Texas, and now in Omaha Nebraska.

In 2017, my son died after a short illness. His death was sudden and unexpected and began a journey through grief that led to my resignation from Church of the Holy Apostles in order to spend time working through my grief, as well as spending time with my spouse and other children (and grandchildren).

Looking Ahead

I am married to Julie Mills Proffitt and we are proud parents of three children and three grandchildren.  We spend much of our time providing care for our youngest grandchild and enjoying watching our Jayhawks play basketball and football.

My services include speaking at conferences, leading retreats and consulting with boards or individuals.  My approach combines both the academic and experiential.  Fees for these services are determined by contractual agreement. I am continuing with the writing of my first book.
